The 1890 Lift

A Different Kind of Carriage

With demand soaring and the original lift often overwhelmed, a second track with two carriages was added in 1890. It wasn’t just a copy; it was a clever response to space and engineering challenges. Built on a tougher gradient and shorter incline, the new lift used stepped carriages to accommodate passengers comfortably, with 16 seats in pairs facing a central gangway.

The track ran at a steeper 42-degree angle, supported by heavier rails and fitted with improved safety mechanisms. The second lift was active until the 1960s when its carriages were removed, and the track fell into disuse. The second track played a vital role in expanding capacity and testing new ideas. Today, it’s set to support the lift once again.  This time by housing solar panels to help power the restored system and make the lift more sustainable for future generations.
